He was the son of Thomas Lothrop and Mary (?).3
On 15 Oct. 1602, John Lowthroppe of Yorkshire, aged 16 years, was admitted a pleb of Christ Church, Oxford. He then went to Cambridge, where he was admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Queen's College in 1606, and to the degree of Master of Arts in 1609.2
Rev. John Lothrop married an unknown person on 10 October 1610 at Eastwell, Kent, England.
In 1611, he was appointed curate at the parish church in Egerton, 48 miles SE of London, in the Lower Half hundred of Calehill, Lathe of Scray, Kent. He left the Church of England and joined the Independents in 1623.4 On the 22nd of April 1632, Rev. John Lothrop and his secret congregation in Black Friar's were discovered, and he and many of his congregation were arrested. He was imprisoned in Newgate prison until April 24, 1634, when he was released on bond. He sailed to New England shortly after his release.5 As recorded in Gov. Winthrop's Journal, p. 71, on Sept. 18, 1634, "The Griffin and another ship now arriving with about 200 passengers. Mr. Lathrop and Mr. Sims, two godly ministers coming in the same ship."6 He died on 8 November 1653 at Barnstable, Massachusetts, at age 68.1 |
