History of William H. and Charlotte (Gillette) Strever Homestead The first known record of this farm located about one mile northeast of Chatham, N.Y. was in the late 1700's. Records show it was owned and lived in by Josiah Richmond and wife Mary Hall. They were married Nov. 7, 1782 and it can be assumed they lived there from that time on; at least their children, Simeon, George, Elizabeth, George (2nd), Tessie, Mary, and Matilda were born there. There was a basement under the whole house. The two women slaves who did the work of the house and cooked the meals for the family lived in this basement and also cooked all the meals there; carried them upstairs and served them in the large dining room. Besides this dining room there was also a large parlor (as called in those days), between these two rooms is a medium sized hall with stairs going up to the three bedrooms above. Back of each two main rooms below were small bedrooms. A pantry opened from the dining room in one side of an open porch and a storage closet beside the other bedroom. A few hundred feet north from the house, in the direction of a wooded area, was located a spring of cool clear fine tasting water, near it were two small cabins where the men slaves lived. Mrs. Richmond was quite a lady as were many women of that time who had slaves to do the work for them. Time went on and the youngest daughter married a man named Lamphere. Her father built a house for her just over the yard fence to the southwest and gave here sixty acres of land with it. There they lived for sometime, but later they bought a farm further north and sold their dowry home to a man by the name of George Shufelt who married and lived there for some years. Then Josiah and Mary's next youngest daughter Mary married Elijah Birge Nov. 15, 1815. Since Josiah did not feel able to run the farm longer he requested Mary and Elijah to stay on in the old home. This they did and here in this house their eleven children were born and mostly grew up there. Josiah and his wife in the meantime having passed away, the farmstead came in possession of Mary and Elijah. About this time Elijah's father being somewhat feeble and advanced of age prevailed upon Mary and Elijah to move in with him and operate the farm that was only a short distance in a northerly direction. They then sold the old homestead to a Mr. and Mrs. Parker.2 Research Analysis: Josiah Richmond shows up twice in the 1800 census for Columbia County, NY. Once he is listed in Chatham and once in Kinderhook. Since the patterns of both households are identical (01111-21110), it seems very likely that this is the same man and household, enumerated twice due to a move. In the Chatham census, he is listed next to Ezekiel Webster.3 |

Rhoda Richmond was born on 5 May 1775 at probably, Columbia, New York.2
She was the daughter of George Richmond and Hannah Caswell.
Rhoda Richmond married Ezekiel Webster, son of Daniel Webster and Hannah Vosburgh, circa 1795 at Chatham, Columbia County, New York.1
Rhoda Richmond died on 13 November 1843 at Inlet, Lee, Illinois, at age 68.3
Research Analysis: Rhoda is identified as one of the 'three unnamed daughters' of George Richmond and Hannah Caswell based on: 1) The identification of George Richmond as Rhoda's father in the published genealogy of Gov. John Webster. 2) The match of both date and location for Rhoda's birth with George Richmond's age, location, and date of marriage. 3) The fact that there was only one George Richmond in NY in the Federal 1790 census, and he was located in Kinderhook, Columbia Co., NY. This would have been when Rhoda was 15, roughly 5 years before she married Ezekiel Webster. 4) In the 1880 census, Rhoda's son Orange Webster identifies his mother's birthplace as New York. 5) In the 1800 census of Chatham, Columbia, NY, the household of Ezekiel Webster is shown next door to the household of Josiah Richmond. Presumably this is the Josiah Richmond who is the son of George Richmond and Hannah Caswell, and the brother of Rhoda Richmond Webster. The NY 1790 census shows one other Richmond in Columbia Co, also in the town of Kinderhook: Simon, with 1 male>16; 2 males<16; and 3 females. This is probably Simeon, Rhoda's brother. It also shows a Josiah Richmond in the town of Stillwater, Albany Co. (now Saratoga Co.).4,5 |
