William Tuttle's was a family of some notoriety. Our ancestor is his daughter Anna. His daughter Elizabeth Tuttle was a very loose woman, who had children by several men while married to a man who, after many years and several pleas, was finally allowed to divorce her. Another daughter, Mercy Tuttle, married Samuel Brown. At the age of 41, she killed her 17-year-old son Samuel, Jr. with an axe as he was sleeping. She was found guilty of his murder (although she was probably insane), but escaped execution. Yet another daughter, Sarah Tuttle, was murdered by William's son Benjamin, also with an axe. Benjamin did not escape and was hanged for the murder seven months later. William Tuttle was born circa 1609 at England.1 He was the son of Symon Tootill and Isabel Wells.1 William Tuttle married Elizabeth (?) say 1629/30 at probably, Northamptonshire, England.1 William Tuttle, with his wife and three children (including Anna) embarked on 2 April 1635 on the Planter for New England.1 William Tuttle died in 1673 at New Haven, Connecticut.1 He is the great (3) grandfather of Vice President Aaron Burr through his daughter Elizabeth. |
