Seven years later, in 1775, he was executor of the will of Willam Hornbuckle, his father, in Prince William county, Virginia. On 31 January 1781, Solomon was granted 64 acres on the Pohick and Accotink Rivers in Truro parish, Fairfax county, Virginia, the farm where he lived until 1787. Solomon is listed in the Fairfax county tax lists from 1782 until 1788, when he disappears from the records. In 1782 he owned two horses and six cows and had no slaves. Solomon and Cassandra Hornbuckle sold their farm on 2 October 1787 to Richard Chichester for 80 pounds Virginia money. Washington Hornbuckle married Clarissa Boger on 30 June 1820 at Green Co., Kentucky.
Washington Hornbuckle died on 18 January 1886 at Menard, Illinois, at age 85.
He Washington Hornbuckle lived in Green Co., KY for a few years after his marriage before moving to Tallula, in the part of Sangamon Co. Illinois, which became Menard County in 1836. Washington received two grants of land, one from the State of Illinois 26 November 1829 for 80 acres and one from the Federal Government for 42.3 acres on 1 November 1839. Later in life, he split up his property among his children, first in 1872, then again in 1883. He was a farmer all of his life. Hen he died, he left an estate valued at $720. One of his descendants, James E. Wiseman of Springfield, Illinois, gave this account of Washington's arrival in Illinois: When Washington Hornbuckle and his wife Clarissa settled on a homestead located about 3/4 of a mile west of Hickory Grove Cemetery, the came driving a wagon drawn by oxen and wearing wooden shoes with ox hides nailed around them to keep their feet warm and dry. He eventually settled around two to three hundred acres of farm land and timber. the first one-room log cabin he built in the Hickory Grove area had only three sides closed in. The fourth side, or the south end of the cabin, was left party open so they could build a small fire under the edge of the roof for warmth and cooking. As the Indian tribes moved through this part of the country at that time, they camped about 1/8 of a mile away from Washington's log cabin. I have found many an Indian arrowhead, while I farmed and plowed in this same area. They lived near New Salem, Illinois, where Abraham Lincoln lived and worked from 1831 to 1837. According to one story, while surveying in the neighborhood, Lincoln called at the HORNBUCKLE cabin at noon hoping to get his noon day meal. Mrs. Hornbuckle apologized for not having any meal ready, saying she was unaware of the exact time of day. Lincoln then drew a line on the floor at a right angle to the threshold running north and south, beginnin at the door jamb, and told her when the edge of the shadow met that line, it would be noon. Another legend about LINCOLN is that while working as a clerk in a local store he overchaged a customer, Mrs. Hornbuckle, 6-1/4 cents and walked three miles to her home to return the money.
