Frances Hohimer was also known as Hannah Hoehammer.
She was born in 1777 at North Carolina.
She married James Hornbuckle, son of Solomon Hornbuckle and Cassandra (?).
Frances Hohimer died after 1850 at Menard, Illinois.
She (Research):OK - so William C. Hohimer and Macea Summers are the Wm. Hohimer (55 - birthplace not recorded) and Mica (40 - birthplace not recorded) on p. 340 of the 1850 census of Menard Co. Three households up from them on the same page is Washington Hornbuckle (age 50 - birthplace not recorded) and his wife Clarissa. Also living with them is Sarah Bogen (Buger?) age 83. This is very likely Clarissa's mother (possibly aunt), since there is a marriage record for Clarisa Buger to Washington Hornbuckle on 30 June 1820 in Green Co. KY. (from ancestry.com's version of: Dodd, Jordan R, et. al. Early American Marriages: Kentucky to 1850. Bountiful, UT: Precision Indexing Publishers). One of the two households between them is of a Thomas Elmore (35) and Dinah (25). Lydia's entry in the 1850 census (from Jones Co. Iowa) gives her birthplace as KY. While Tilmon Hornbuckle's entry in the Menard Co. census in 1850 gives his birthplace as S.C. (that might be N.C. - unfortunately I just have my transcription for that page - I don't have a copy of the page itself here), his wife Nancy's birthplace is given as KY. The whole family seems pretty well centered on Kentucky for the period from 1800 (Washington's birth) through 1820 (Washington's marriage) - at this point Lydia was six, since she was born in 1814. Just to tie all these families together a little more firmly, also in the 1850 census for Menard Co. on p. 332 we have Levi Summers (age 70 - born in N.C.) and his wife Lydia (age 70 - also born in N.C.). Living in the same household are Wm. H. Hohimer (age 23 or 25 - born in IL), Mary Hohimer (age 18 - IL) and Peter Hohimer (age 21 - IL). Next door to them is 'the man who taught Lincoln', Mentor Graham (48 - KY) and his wife Sarah Raffety Graham, the sister of Richard Raffety who married Lydia Hornbuckle. So - if our current hypotheses are correct, then William Hornbuckle and Hannah Hohimer had at least three children: Washington b. 1800; Tilmon b. 1803; and Lydia b. 1814. This would allow Hannah to be born in 1780 and die before 1824. (Another possibility is that Hannah was William Hornbuckle's 2nd wife, and Washington and Tilmon were Lydia's half-brothers - that would allow Hannah to be born later than 1780). In 1825-6, Hannah's younger brother William C. Hohimer moved to Menard Co., IL (well, it was actually Sangamon Co. when they moved there), together with her children Washington, Tilmon, and Lydia. There, on 29 Jan 1834, Lydia married Richard Raffety (who may well have moved with them, since he was also from Green Co., KY). It is possible that by 1825 both Hannah and William Hornbuckle were dead. It sounds like I should definitely check out Green Co. marriage records for information on Washington Hornbuckle's marriage. I should also check the Sangamon Co., IL marriage records for Lydia's marriage. Any suggestions on where to track down Tilmon's marriage would be appreciated (I'll certainly check Green Co. pretty carefully). Ideally, I should also be looking for Hannah and William's marriage, but it seems like it could have been in one of a large number of places. As for finding William Hornbuckle in censuses for KY, there is a William Hornbuckel in the 1800 tax list for Jessamine Co. There is also a William Harnbuckle in the 1820 census for Fleming Co., KY (p. 041). You said that you had found William Hornbuckle in the 1810 census for Fleming Co. - can you give me the page reference? Can you think of any other creative ways to spell Hornbuckle? (These are all based on the ancestry.com AIS Index search). I need to get a copy of the Map Guide to the Federal Census so I know where these counties really were. Putting Hannah as the daughter of Henry Hohimer and Rhoda Parris seems to fit, now the problem is just to find clear confirmation (or something that points elsewhere). I think I'd better get a really big piece of paper (or maybe, better yet, a map) and start putting down everything I know about who was where when between the Hohimers and the Hornbuckles. In any case, thanks very much for your help. By the way, do you have a GEDCOM file or text listing showing Henry Hohimer's ancestry and, say, children and grandchildren? I hope this note isn't too confused, I've been rambling on it (and consulting sources) for the last 2 hours, and it's now 11:00PM. I guess I'd better send it off and go to bed. -- Dean -----Original Message----- From: J.R. Hohimer [mailto:71341.312@@compuserve.com] Sent: Saturday, March 27, 1999 6:47 AM To: Dean B. Krafft Subject: RE: Hohimers Dean, The J.H. Hohimer in the 1850 census is actually Isaac Hodgens Hohimer. The I looks like a J. His wife was Averilla Duncan and they named their first living daughter after his mother, Macea. Isaac was born in Green County, KY about 1823. His parents were William C. Hohimer and Macea(Becky) Summers. William C. Hohimer and Macea Summers were married 23 April 1822 in Green County, KY and Isaac was their first child. Macea's parents were Levi Summers and Lydia Elmore who were living by the Hohimers also in the 1850 census of Menard County. William C. Hohimer was born about 1798 to Henry Hohimer and his first wife Rhoda Parris?? I believe that Rhoda died giving birth to William C. Have you checked the marriage records for Washington, Tilmon and Lydia to see who the bondsmen and the witnesses were? Also for any consent letters from their parents? That would definitely help! Did you ever check the early census records for Hornbuckles in KY? If Lydia was born in 1814 probably in KY and Tilman was born in 1807 also probably in KY even though I think you said that the 1850 census said SC?? When and where was Washington born?? That might narrow down when and where Hannah and William Hornbuckle were married. If we could find when and where they were married, the land deeds, court records, etc. might lead us to what happened to Hannah and William. I would still say, that if there was a Hannah Hohimer, then she was the sister to William C. Hohimer and a daughter of Henry Hohimer and his first wife Rhoda. That means she would have been born between 1780 and 1798. She would have married between 1798 and 1816. And if Lydia was the youngest of many children, then I would say that Hannah died in childbirth with Lydia before Henry Hohimer died in early 1824. I do not believe that Hannah was a sister to Henry Hohimer. That would make her birthdate around 1760-1761. Now all we have to do is prove any of this. A marriage record for Hannah and her husband would be a great help in establishing an age for Hannah and possibly who her parents were!!!! What do you think now????~~Mike. |
