He made a survey of 104 acres on the west fork of Bowman's Creek on 22 Nov. 1771. He sold some land in 1785 for 1,150 pounds of tobacco. His brothers, Thomas and William, purchased land in North Carolina and John moved to North Carolina to live near them. They lived in North Carolina for at least 14 years. Thomas sold the last of his land in 1801 and John sold his land in 1802. It seems they may have moved back to Virginia for a short time before moving to Kentucky around 1808. The three brothers settled in different areas of Kentucky. John settled in Green Co., Kentucky.2 John Rafferty died in 1827 at Green, Kentucky.2 |

He immigrated about 1750. He died about 1779 in Washington Co, Va. He had an estate probated on 21 Mar 1780 in Washington Co, Va. He was buried in Va. He was a Planter/shoemaker. Thomas Rafferty arrived from England around 1733 and settled in Nancymond County, Virginia. Nancymond County is located across and down the James River a few miles from Jamestown. He married shortly after his arrival in America. Thomas Rafferty served in the French and Indian War in Major Andrew Lewis' Company. The French and Indian war occured 1755-1756. Listed in the Virginia Magazine History and Bibrography Vol I, pg. 383 is the size roll of Maj. Andrew Lewis' Company. Thomas Rafferty is listed as age 22, size 5' 3 1/2', of Irish descent from Nancymond County, Va. He was serving as a shoemaker in the Virginia troops during the French and Indian War. He moved to Augusta Co., Va. and there married a second time to Esther Grove, the widow of a wealthy landowner. The Groves had six children. May 1764 Thomas purchased from William Patterson 18 acres of land on the South River, a branch of the Shenandoah River, for 12 pounds. 1769 Survey of land in the south end of Augusta Co. for Thomas Rafferty 1770 Thomas and family moved to Botetourt Co. (now Montgomery Co.) Va. where he purchased 165 acres for 25 pounds. The land was located on Roanoke River at a place called Devil's Den. The Devil's Den property was purchased from John Madison and witnessed by Thomas Madison 28 Feb 1770. 1771 He bought another 100 acres in Botetourt Co. just north of his Devil's Den property. Oct. 1771 He sold 18 acres of land on the north side of South River 1773 They moved to Washington Co., Va. There they owned a 535 acre plantation about 15 miles east of Abington. At this time his family consisted of 5 boys by his first wife, Esther's six children by her first husband and his 2 daughters by Esther. 21 Oct 1779 date of Thomas Rafferty's will in Washington Co., Va. He left 1/3 of property to his wife-the balance to be divided equally among his two daughters. 21 March 1780 Date will was filed in Washington Co., Ky. Thomas Rafferty owned several thousand acres. The custom in those days was to dispose of real property before death by gift or deed to the sons with the major share going to the oldest son. Thomas was his oldest son. Personal property amounted to 6544 pounds, a large sum for those days. Thomas' sons had aquired over 3200 acres of land by deeds and grants in Virginia and North Carolina.1 |
