                        Exerpts from 'Sketch of John Cary' found in PLYMOUTH PILGRIM. Samuel F. Cary had access to manuscript more than 100 years old, written by a grandson of John, which says that 'John Cary, when a youth, was sent by his father to France to perfect his education, and that while absent his father died. On returning to Somersetshire he differed with his brothers about the settlement of his father's estate. He compromised by receiving one hundred pounds as his portion and immediately sailed for America.'
                        Tradition says that he was the first Latin School teacher in the Plymouth Colony, and that he taught Elder Brewster the Hebrew.                              Joseph Cary was born on 18 April 1663 at Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts.1,2 He was the son of John Cary and Elizabeth Godfrey. Joseph Cary married Mercy Bushnell in 1692 at Windham, Connecticut.1 Joseph Cary died on 10 January 1722 at Windham, Connecticut, at age 58.1 He When a young man, went to Norwich, CT and became one of the original Proprietors of Windham; Feb. 9, 1694, he bought 1,000 acres of land for ten pounds nine shillings. He took position with the first men of the town in civil and ecclesiastical affairs, and was chosen repeatedly to serve in the most important offices, civil, military, and religious; was one of the original members of the First Congregational Church in Windham, and at its organization, Dec. 10, 1700, was chosen Deacon, and held the office till his death. So highly was he esteemed that he was buried by his townsmen under arms, which was a very unusual occurrence. He m. first, Hanna , second, Mercy, the widow of Jonathan Rudd.
