Stanley Family compiled by Virginia Lee Stanley, Feb. 4, 2003: Nathan Stanley b. 13 April 1777, Winthrop (now Readfield), ME; d. China, ME, 6 Mar 1859; m. Saly Gould, 19 Nov 1798, Vassalboro, ME. She died in China, ME, 3 Aug 1865 at 85 yrs. On Oct 1, 1798, tax rolls show Nathan owning 50 acres in Vassalboro. It was valued at $150.00. He also lived in Palermo where his first child was born. Nathan was an early settler to China, near the Vassalboro line and built a house on a hill, then called Stanley Hill. There is a Stanly Hill Road that goes west from China Lake, formerly called Twelve-Mile Pond. He probably went there as a young man with his father to settle one of the 200 acre lots offered to settlers. He seems to have maintained a home there and even while residing and doing business in Belfast and Monticello, returned to China where he died. Several of his children and grandchildren are also buried in the China Village Cemetery. They resided in Belfast for a number of years where he became the lessee of a hotel at the corner of Main and High Streets in 1827. Sometime between 1831 and 1833 he moved to Monticello, ME where he settled in the extreme southern part on Lots 6 and 7. The main north/south road ran between these two lots. On the west side an orchard of seedling apple trees was planted. These lots were 160 acres each. He built a log house, and later a large frame house on Lot 6. US 1 now runs through lot six. His house would have been on the west side of the present highway facing the old highway, near the end of Lake Road. He was a justice of the peace in Monticello. Sometime before 1850, he moved to the northern part of Littleton (this was probably within a few miles of his Monticello home) with his son James M. Stanley, where he was listed, along with his wife "Sarah," on the 1850 census. They settled on a place opposite Hill's mill. Thomas Burrill, the company drummer, wrote an account of the China Company's 1812 War experience. He says that he was awakened in the night and ordered to report, when they marched to Vassalboro the next day and then to Wiscasset where they were told that the enemy was expected to attack and sack and burn the village. They camped across the bay at Edgecomb for three weeks. Burrill describes their commander, Col. Nathan Stanley as a "Splendid officer, with large experience".1 Col. Nathan Stanley was born in 1777 at Readfield, Kennebec, Maine.2 He was born on 13 April 1777 at Winthrop, Kennebec, Maine.3,1,4,5 He was the son of Nathaniel Stanley and Abigail Hall.3,5,6,7 Col.
