William Johnston Dean was born on 19 July 1843 at Port Hope, Durham, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Matthew Dean and Ann Longmoor. He moved with his family from Canada to the USA in 1855. They settled in Shakopee, Minnesota. William Johnston Dean began military service on 20 August 1862 at Minnesota, in the 9th Minnesota Infantry Volunteers, Company I.1 For his last year of service in the 9th Minnesota Volunteers in the Civil War, William J. Dean kept a daily diary of his experiences. He ended military service on 24 August 1865 at Ft. Snelling, St. Paul, Minnesota.1 He married Rebecca Cordelia Pond, daughter of Rev. Samuel William Pond and Cordelia Eggleston, on 24 December 1867. William Johnston Dean was nominated by the Prohibition Party as their candidate for Representative to the U.S. Congress for the Fourth Congressional District on 24 July 1890 at St. Paul, Minnesota.2 He was nominated as the candidate for Governor of Minnesota on the Prohibition Party ticket on 1 July 1896 at Minneapolis, Minnesota.3 W.J. Dean ran for mayor of Minneapolis on a Prohibition-related party ticket in 1900. He died on 22 October 1910 at age 67.
