They at once went to Rochester, N.Y., on the Erie Canal, where the cholera waws at that time ragin, but left it behind them at that city, and pursued their journey Westward. They remained on a farm in the vicinity of Pittsburgh the following winter, and the next spring they traveled over Illinois and Missouri, and finally selected St. Clair County, Ill., as the scene of their future operations."4
Graduated from Heidelberg University at age 19. Resided for a time in Philadelphia, taking out his first naturalization papers and played flute in the Philharmonic Orchestra.
