He was a soldier in Capt. Nathan Blackman's Company of Rhode Island Militia, 1776.4
"When Washington was forced to obtain food directly from the citizenry, he was careful to pay or to issue bills of credit for all such supplies. He deplored the concept of plundering the American citizens as being worthy only of the enemy. There were instances, however, where plundering and living off the countryside was an officially approved way of staving off starvation during a grueling march. The individual soldier often had no hesitation to plunder a town his unit had just overwhelmed. He considered the treasures to be found there the spoils of war. His officers often condoned that philosophy--and even encouraged it. An example is found in a soldier's diary preserved for posterity. It stated that a Sergeant Amaziah Blackmore, accompanied by a lieutenant and a fifer, went to East Chester among the deserted houses to plunder them. They were captured by a patrol of Hessians on a similar mission, but Sergeant Blackmore escaped. When he reported to his commanding officer that evening, "Captain Baley and Lieutenant Richmond went down and plundered some houses at East Chester of furniture of the value of $400 and one colt." Upon learning of this, Brigadier General John Nixon thought "this was such fine work that he made a present of the colt to Captain Baley."5 Amaziah Blackmar appeared on the census of 1790 at Scituate Township, Providence, Rhode Island; page 37, as Amagiah Blackman, 01-01-04-00-00.6,7 He appeared on the census of 1800 at Providence, Rhode Island; page 494, Amaziah Blackman, 02110-3010100.8 |
